Derek Leggins

Derek Leggins, born a product of a multi-talented family reared in our nation’s capital of Washington D.C.  Anchored in the church this was the blossoming of this fabulous vocal talent which became noticed at the age of three.  While attending jr. high school, Derek developed an ear for harmonies and became very proficient in placing harmonies to songs that did not contain them.  During that time an introduction to all types of music, inclusive of classical, jazz, opera, and rhythm and blues, allowed the development of a multi-octave range.  The result is a polished “diamond in the rough”. 

 

Derek as the entertainer has a cultivated style inspired by several of the award winning international singing icons we know and love.  Barry White, Lou Rawls, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Nat (King) Cole, and the Temptations just to name a few. All these talents, wrapped up into one personality on the stage, creates a beautiful and soulful experience. 

The journey began in the church choirs and then with a local singing group named Flair, bringing Derek to Philadelphia to sign a deal with WMOT records.  As groups go, the end result of that partnership should have been a flourishing music career but two of the members decided not to continue, placing the group’s singing career on hold.  Even with this temporary setback, Derek continued singing as he built successful careers, first as a professional football player and subsequently in the business world. 

Derek then focused his talents as a solo artist, and his growing successful appearances included:  Good Morning America, The Apollo Theater,  The New York Mets,  The Brooklyn Cyclones, TSOP, Fortune 500 Companies’ Gala Affairs, various country club special events, The United Way, The 2007 NBA All-Star Gala LV, The Fitzgerald’s Casino 5th Anniversary LV, KLAV Radio LV, the Hollywood Park Casino LA. 

Opening act for Ashford & Simpson, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Jean Carne, recording credits and live performances with the Three Degrees, winners of the 2008 Black Music Awards, and countless of elite weddings within the U.S. and internationally.  For 13 years Derek was the lead singer and band leader for “Jumpstreet”, issuing command performances and leaving audiences wanting more with standing ovations and insisting on curtain calls.  Currently Derek is completing a studio CD of some of your favorites and his originals, putting this unique voice and arrangements to these Soul and R&B classics and classics to be.
